Karl Bodmer, or, Johann Carl Bodmer (1809 – 1893)

Karl Bodmer was a Swiss-French artist, printmaker, etcher, lithographer, zinc engraver, draughtsman, illustrator and hunter. He is best known in the U.S. for his scenes of the American West in the 19th century. In 1832, he accompanied the German explorer, Prince Maximillian zu Wied-Neuwied, on his Missouri River expedition, where he recorded, extremely accurate depictions of cities, towns, rivers and the Native American tribes that they encountered. After 1843, he became known as Jean-Charles Bodmer.
