Joseph-Désiré Court (1797 – 1865)

Joseph-Désiré Court was a French painter of portraits and historical subjects. In 1817, he joined the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he trained under Antoine-Jean Gros. In 1821, Court won the prestigious, Prix de Rome for his painting, “Samson and Delilah”, it depicts Delilah, handing Samson over to the Philistines. Court began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1824 with considerable success. In 1853, he returned to his home town, where he accepted an appointment as conservator at the Musée de Rouen, he remained there for the rest of his life.
