John Maler Collier (1850 – 1934)
John Maler Collier was an English writer and artist who painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style. Collier trained as an artist in Paris, under Jean-Paul Laurens, and then at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. He became one of the most outstanding portrait painters of his generation. Collier also painted mythological and historical compositions, some of his most famous works are, “Lady Godiva”, “Lilith” and “The Water Nymph”. Another of his notable paintings, is a portrait of Charles Darwin which he produced in 1881, Collier repainted it in 1883, feeling that he could improve on the original. John Collier married twice in his life, both times to daughters of the biologist and anthropologist, Thomas Henry Huxley.
