John George Brown (1831 – 1913)
John George Brown. Although he was born in England, he was an American artist who specialised in genre scenes. In 1853, he moved to New York, where he established a studio. His main claim to fame was his paintings of New York’s street urchins, such as, shoe and boot shiners, flower sellers and street musicians. Brown’s style is probably best described as British genre, adapted to American themes. His works were painted in accurate detail but his choice of colours were a little flawed at times. Brown liked to paint landscapes for his own pleasure.
