John Constable (1776 – 1837)
John Constable was an English artist who painted in the Romantic style. He was born in East Bergholt, a village on the River Stour in Suffolk and was the son of a wealthy Corn miller who owned Flatford mill in Suffolk and Dedham Mill in Essex. John was known primarily for his innovative landscapes of Dedham and other areas surrounding his home which became known as, “Constable Country”. Although he never had much financial success in his lifetime, he has since become one of the most celebrated painters in British art.
