John Brett (1831 – 1902)

John Brett was an English artist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He was noted for his meticulously detailed landscapes. Brett’s biggest claim to fame was his painting entitled, “The Stonebreaker”, he exhibited it in 1858, it depicts a boy, breaking up stones to be used in the making of a road surface. The youth, who appears to be somewhat, reluctant towards his work, is sitting in a brightly lit and finely detailed backdrop.
