Jean-Frédéric Bazille (1841 – 1870)

Jean-Frédéric Bazille was a French artist who was noted for his paintings of figures, set in landscapes. He became interested in art when he saw the work of Eugène Delacroix. In 1859, to please his family, he began studying medicine and in 1862, he moved to Paris where he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley who turned his attention to Impressionism. Bazille began studying art in Charles Gleyre’s studio and after failing his medical exams in 1864, started painting full time. He included Claude Monet and Édouard Manet among his friends.
