Jean Cousin the Elder (c. 1495 – c. 1560)
Jean Cousin was a French artist, sculptor, geometrician, stained-glass designer and wood cutter. He was known as Jean Cousin the Elder to distinguish him from his artist son, Jean Cousin the Younger. Cousin the Elder was born in the Sens region, where he trained as a glass painter, he also studied mathematics at the same time and later, wrote a successful book on the subject. He had a rich and varied career in which he designed and painted the windows of Sens Cathedral. He went to Paris in around 1539 and helped to design the decorations for the visit of Charles V. Today, few paintings can be confidently attributed to him.
