Jan van de Cappelle (1626 – 1679)

Jan van de Cappelle was a Dutch Golden Age painter of waterscapes and winter landscapes. These days, he is considered to be the most prominent marine artist of 17th century Holland. Cappelle tended to paint calm waters, such as rivers and estuaries which allowed him to include detailed reflections of the skies, sails and rigging of the boats and ships that were in his pictures. Apart from painting, he spent a lot of his time, helping his father, Franchoy, manage his large dyeworks company. In 1674, Cappelle inherited his father’s, lucrative dyeworks business.
