Jan de Bray was a Dutch artist of the Dutch Golden Age. He was born in Haarlem and lived and worked there until he became bankrupt at the age of 60 and moved to Amsterdam.
De Bray’s works were mainly portraits which often depicted groups of people, he also painted historical scenes. One of his finest works is a version of “The Banquet of Antony and Cleopatra”, you can see de Bray standing at the extreme left of the painting, looking across at his actual, sister and wife. His mother and father are the central figures, playing the roles of Antony and Cleopatra.
