Jan Asselyn, or, Jan Asselijn (c. 1610 – 1652)
Jan Asselyn was an artist of the Dutch Golden Age. His most famous painting is, “The Threatened Swan”, this particular work is far removed from his usual, Italianate landscape paintings and portrays a swan, defending its nest against a dog, (approaching, bottom left). Some believe it to be symbolic of Dutch nationalism.
