James E. Buttersworth, full name, James Edward Buttersworth (1817 – 1894)

James E. Buttersworth was an English artist who painted marine subjects. He was born in London, England, to a family of maritime artists and studied under his father, Thomas Buttersworth Jr. In around 1845, James moved to the USA and settled in West Hoboken, New Jersey (now known as Union City). His paintings were noted for their precise detail, impressive settings and graceful movement. In the United States, he is considered to be one of the most outstanding marine vessel artists of the 19th century.
