Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen (before 1470 – 1533)
Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen was a Northern Netherlandish woodcutter and painter. Little is known about him and historians rely on the biographical account of his life, written by poet, historian and painter, Karel van Mander, plus records kept by the city of Amsterdam and the archives of Egmond Abbey, a Benedictine monastery that commissioned works by him. Cornelisz was mainly active in Amsterdam, where he became a leading woodcut designer. He produced many religious works and portraits and ran a productive workshop in Kalverstraat. Judging by his name, he was probably born in Oostzaan.
