Hendrick van Balen (c. 1575 – 1632)

Hendrick van Balen was a Flemish artist who painted in the Baroque style. He was also a stained-glass designer. Hendrick van Balen specialised in cabinet paintings often painted on a copper support. His favourite themes were mythological and allegorical scenes but sometimes he painted religious studies. He played an important role in the renewal of Flemish painting in the early 17th century and was one of artist, Anthony van Dyck’s teachers.

Cabinet Paintings are small paintings, they usually show full-length figures or landscapes but on a very small scale. From the 15th century, wealthy art collectors would put them in a cabinet which was the name for a small, private room within the house.
