Hans Burgkmair, or, Hans Burgkmair the Elder (1473 – 1531)

Hans Burgkmair was born in Augsburg, Germany, he was an extremely successful woodcut designer and artist. Most of his paintings were of religious subjects and portraits of the citizens of Augsburg. He spent much of his time working on woodcut projects for Emperor Maximilian I. His compositions are exhibited in Munich, Vienna and a number of other locations. Many of his woodcut prints were designed for book illustrations. Burgkmair died in Augsburg in 1531.
