Gunnar Berndtson, full name, Gunnar Fredrik Berndtson (1854 – 1895)
Gunnar Berndtson was a Finnish painter, who was noted for his attention to realistic detail. In 1876, Berndtson went to Paris and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme, whilst there, he became interested in the Salon style of painting. From 1822 to 1823 he was in Egypt where he joined the French community there, painting portraits and producing illustrations for the French publication, Le Monde Illustré. In 1886 he returned to Finland but made frequent trips back to Paris, to exhibit his work at the Salon.
