Giuseppe Cesari, also known as, Cavaliere d'Arpino (1568 – 1640)
Giuseppe Cesari was an Italian, Mannerist painter, mainly known for his frescoes but he also painted religious and mythological subjects. It is most likely that he was born in Arpino, a small town between Rome and Naples. In around 1582, he moved to Rome, where he became immensely successful. His patrons included, Pope Clement VIII and Sixtus V. Cesari was made, “Cavaliere di Cristo”, (Knight of Christ), by Pope Clement and later became known as, “Cavaliere d'Arpino”, (Knight of Arpino). Cesari’s most notable pupil was Caravaggio, who joined his studio, briefly, as an assistant in around 1593-1594.
