Giacomo Ceruti (1698 – 1767)

Giacomo Ceruti was an Italian artist of the late Baroque movement. He was born, and died in Milan but worked in Brescia for a considerable time. He also spent time in Venice, where he painted the frescoes on the staircase of the Palazzo Grassi. Ceruti was known for his still-lifes, religious works and his portrait paintings. He also painted genre scenes, depicting beggars and the poor, dressed in rags, (Pitocchi), which led to his nickname, Il Pitocchetto, (the little beggar).
