Francis Cotes (1726 – 1770)
Francis Cotes was an English portrait artist from London. He was a pioneer of English pastel painting and a founding member of the Royal Academy. Cotes trained under the portrait painter, George Knapton and later, set up his own business in London. In the 1760s, Cotes began using oil paints, with great success, although he never totally abandoned pastels. For a while, he was the only serious rival to English artists, Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
