Edward William Cooke (1811 – 1880)
Edward William Cooke was an English marine artist born in Pentonville, London. His father George and uncle William Bernard Cooke, were both prominent line engravers and Edward soon showed that he too, had a natural talent for art. He went on to become a skilled draughtsman and engraver. In 1829, aged just 18, he published a series of fifty, meticulously produced engravings, entitled, “Shipping and Craft”. Cooke also painted marine subjects and was formally tutored by James Stark in 1834. He first exhibited his work at the Royal Academy and the British Institute in 1835.
