Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828 – 1901)

Edward Mitchell Bannister was a black, Canadian-American painter. He mostly painted pastoral landscapes in a tonalist style. Bannister, greatly admired the French artist, Jean-François Millet and went on to develop a masterful control of colour and atmosphere in his own work.
