Correggio, real name, Antonio Allegri (c. 1490 – 1534)
Correggio was an Italian artist and the most important Renaissance painter to emerge from the school of Parma, his works greatly influenced many of the artists of the following Baroque and Rococo movements. Correggio produced religious and allegorical compositions which are energetic and dramatic and display an atmospheric quality through the use of a subtle manipulation of lights and shades (chiaroscuro). He was born in Correggio and adopted that name, although his exact date of birth is unknown. His father, Pellegrino Allegri was a tradesman there. It is believed that Correggio had his first artistic tuition under his father’s brother, Lorenzo Allegri. Correggio also decorated various religious buildings throughout Parma.
