Colijn de Coter (c. 1446 – c. 1538)

Colijn de Coter was a Flemish artist who worked mainly in Brussels and Antwerp where he produced many Alterpieces. His name was sometimes given as Colijn van Brusele, (Colijn of Brussels), which suggests that he may have been born there. A document from 1483, states that Colijn van Brusele, registered with the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp, where he was commissioned to decorate the vault, in the chapel of the Cathedral of Our Lady. Archives belonging to the Brussels Brotherhood of Saint Eloy reveal three payments made to Coter, for the painting of the doors of a church tabernacle, between 1509 and 1511. Although it’s not proven, it is believed by art historians that Colijn directed an influential workshop, with a number of his pupils, including a certain, Cornelis Engebrechtsz of Leiden.
