Cimabue, also known as, Cenni di Pepo (c. 1240 – 1302)

Cimabue was a Florentine artist and designer of mosaics. He was considered by many, to be one of the greatest Italian painters of his time. Medieval art methods tended to produce results that caused figures to appear rather flat and stylised but Cimabue developed a style of his own that allowed him to paint his Byzantine subjects in a more realistically proportioned and detailed manner. Although he may not have received the full recognition that he deserved for the advances that he made to painting at that time, he was still a major contributor to Naturalism and the Realist movement.
