Charles West Cope (1811 – 1890)

Charles West Cope was an English etcher and artist of the Victorian era and a member of the Royal Academy. He was born in Leeds, the son of Charles Cope, a watercolour landscape painter and art teacher, his mother was also a gifted watercolour artist. Cope’s middle name, stems from one of his father’s friends, the revered artist, Benjamin West. Charles West Cope’s paintings mainly consist of genre, literary and historical subjects. He was also commissioned to paint frescoes in the House of Lords after winning a lucrative competition.
