Charles Edward Conder (1868 – 1909)

Charles Conder was an English artist, lithographer and designer. As a young child, he went to India with his mother until her death in 1873, Charles was only four years old and was sent back to England to be educated at various schools, including a boarding school in Eastbourne, East Sussex. After leaving school at the age of 15, his father, a civil engineer, sent him to Australia to be trained in a similar field, but Charles eventually gave this up to pursue his love of art and studied under the artist, Alfred James Daplyn. Conder was influenced by his artist friend, Tom Roberts.
