Carolus-Duran, real name, Charles Auguste Émile Durand (1837 – 1917)
Carolus-Duran was a French artist and art instructor from Lille. He was known for his stylish portraits of members of the French high society. He had his first drawing lessons from a local sculptor named, Augustin-Phidias Cadet de Beaupré, at the Académie de Lille. In 1853, he went to Paris where he adopted the name, Carolus-Duran. One of his early influences was Gustave Courbet.
