Giovanni Antonio Canal, commonly known as Canaletto (1697 – 1768)

Canaletto was an etcher and artist from the Republic of Venice and was considered to be a significant member of the 18th century, Venetian school. Canaletto’s works included detailed cityscapes (vedute), of Venice and London, he also painted imaginary scenes, known as capricci. While in London, he became very successful, due to the large collection of his works, bought by the British merchant and connoisseur, Joseph “Consul” Smith. In 1762, Smith’s collection was sold to King George III.
