Barthel Bruyn the Elder, full name, Bartholomäus Bruyn the Elder (1493 – 1555)
Barthel Bruyn the Elder was a German artist of the German Renaissance. He worked in Cologne, the city where he was born. Bruyn painted portraits and altarpieces and in his day, was recognised as Cologne’s leading portrait artist. Due to the fact that he did not sign his portraits, some of them were wrongly attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger who had a similar style to Bruyn.
