Baldassare d’Este, or, Baldassare da Reggio (1432 – 1506)

Baldassare d'Este was an Italian Artist, born in Reggio. He was said to be an illegitimate child of the Marquis of Ferrara, Niccolò III d’Este. Even so, he enjoyed special rewards and promotions from a succession of Dukes and became court painter at Ferrara. He spent many years there, painting portraits of the Dukes, statesmen and gentry of his day. One of Baldassare’s many appointments during his life, was to be received into the service of his half-brother, Borso, Duke of Ferrara, along with fellow artist, Cosmè Tura, where they both became court painters to the Este family.
