Baciccio, or, Baciccia, real name Giovanni Battista Gaulli (1639 – 1709)
Baciccio was an Italian artist who worked during the High Baroque and early Rococo periods. He is noted for his grand, illusionistic vault frescoes in the Church of the Gesù in Rome.
Illusionistic Art part of the trompe l’oeil genre. This technique is often used when painting frescoes and murals, usually in buildings, such as churches and cathedrals. An artist can make a flat wall look three dimensional, giving the impression that it consists of cavernous bays or alcoves. A common example of illusionistic art, is to make a flat ceiling appear domed or arched. An experienced artist can produce spectacular results.
