Antoine Coypel (1661 – 1722)
Antoine Coypel was a French artist, engraver, decorative designer and draughtsman. He was born in Paris and was the son of painter, Noël Coypel (1628 – 1707). Antoine is known for his biblical, allegorical and mythological works, he also painted portraits and was court painter to the Duke of Orléans and later, to the King of France. He became director of the Académie Royale, and was given custody of the King’s paintings and drawings, (Garde des tableaux et dessins du roi), a title, which combined the roles of director and curator of the king’s art collection.
