Ambrosius Benson, birth name, Ambrogio Benzone (c. 1484 – 1550)

Ambrosius Benson was an Italian artist who became part of the Northern Renaissance. He was born in Lombardy, Italy but lived in Bruges from 1518 to 1550. He trained there in the studio of artist, Gerard David who influenced him greatly. Benson was successful in his lifetime and painted religious subjects for the church and later, carried out commissioned portraits for the wealthy bourgeoisie. He rarely signed his early work but has had many paintings attributed to him, he was particularly popular in Spain.
