Alonso Cano, or, Alonzo Cano (1601 – 1667)

Alonso Cano was a Spanish sculptor, architect, draughtsman and artist, born in Granada. He worked in the cities of, Granada, Seville and Madrid. Cano had a tempestuous demeanour which sometimes led to his expulsion from the places where he worked, on one occasion, he fled, when suspected of the murder of his wife. In spite of his violent personality, his works are considered to be soft and serene. Cano was sometimes referred to as, “the Spanish Michelangelo”, due to his diverse talents.
