Alexandre Cabanel (1823 – 1889)

Alexandre Cabanel was a French artist who painted in the academic style. His works included historical, classical and religious subjects, he was also renowned for his portrait paintings. When he was seventeen, he joined the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and eventually became a professor there. One of his better known paintings, “The Birth of Venus”, painted in 1863, was bought by Napoleon III for his own personal collection.
