Adriaen Coorte (c. 1665 – c. 1707)
Adriaen Coorte was a Dutch artist who painted small and modest still-lifes. Not much is known about him, although recently, some details about his life have come to light. It seems that he was born in IJzendijke, a small town in Zeeuws Vlaanderen in the Dutch province of Zeeland and in 1675, moved to Middelburg with his mother and later, he may have travelled to Vlissingen. Coorte’s work typically portrays natural objects, placed on stone slabs and set against dark backgrounds. From the mid-1690s, he often painted on paper which was then laid on panel or canvas, this was an unusual technique during the 17th and 18th centuries.
